about

Kalpavriksha describes the divine wish-fulfilling tree of Sanskrit mythology. It is a piece to be interpreted in the woods, or under an imaginary tree in your own forest. The piece describes each detail, from root, to trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, falling leaves, ground and root, with an option to repeat this circle ad libitum.

The piece is a structured improvisation based on an image I drew, that was inspired by musical notations and natural forms. The performer has instructions to play with particular musical ideas, like intervals or melodic contours, often approximating pitches and rhythms.

In Odissi Classical Indian dance, one of our mangalacharan (invocation) pieces compares Lord Ganesh’s body to the wish-fulfilling tree, Kalpavriksha. At this moment in the dance, the dancer becomes the tree, in one full-body movement: a satisfying and imaginative experience! I drew out this moment and interpreted it through a musical, improvisatory lens.
