To accommodate the unique demands of Payton MacDonald's Sonic Divide project, Cronometro was scored using icon-based graphic notation, allowing versions to be rendered with any instrument or combination of instruments. The icons represent musical features such as legato, high density of events, crossfade between two textures, repetition, and many others. The title alludes to the strict time grid (300 seconds) into which all of the performance directions are placed, making the work both strict and improvisatory at the same time. A “video score” was also created for this project, allowing the performer(s) to view the score on any video-capable device, with time being indicated by a pointer moving across the vertical grid lines of the score. --Nathaniel Bartlett
