Poetry by John Haek in the shadow before waking, the old dream: I am alone on the summit of a mountain, looking down on a sea of clouds, nothing but the pale morning satin of snow and the clouds shifting silently as the earth, with a vibration so slow it can't be heard, paces its invisible ellipse: I am the last man on earth and I cannot remember my name. I slept on the floor then, high up in a city apartment. I was learning the absence of passion. Though the world is made of it, it was nowhere to be seen. Caught in the contradiction, I could not find an open path. I learned slowly and suffered. Since then I have doubted, I have hidden and I have tried to measure up to existence. I discovered it was possible to accept the world and perhaps myself, but never, never to extinguish the fire burning in the darkness of my being. It has been years since that dream haunted my waking, but I am still there, alone on that mountain, looking down on a sea of clouds. I am the last man on earth and I cannot remember my name.

Instructions from the composer to Payton: "Payton, below is a haiku that I have written for you as you begin your journey. At some point at the end of your first day's travel, please turn your bicycle upside down and consider this haiku. Then, using your fingers and/or found objects from around your campsite, improvise a melody, singing this haiku with improvised bicycle accompaniment . . . In successive days, as you are riding or after your day's journey, compose a new haiku reflective of your experience on that day. At some point at the end of your first day's travel, please turn your bicycle upside down and consider this haiku. Then, using your fingers and/or found objects from around your campsite, improvise a melody, singing this haiku with improvised bicycle accompaniment . . . Continue this process daily throughout your journey . . . The haiku collection may be performed in public settings as you so choose by either approximately replicating your recorded performances or by creating new improvisations of the composed haiku." the old stones listen wind soothes my tired body peace is from within --Michael Udow

about

26 new pieces, for voice and found percussion objects. Payton performed these pieces on his epic Sonic Divide journey (www.sonicdivide.com). He pedaled his mountain bike 2,500 miles on the Great Divide Mountain Bike route and each time he crossed the Continental Divide he performed one of these pieces. He filmed the performances and then made a documentary film about the experience. To see the film go to www.sonicdivide.com/the-film
